4-Week Webinar Series — Thursdays in March

For many, talking about money, let alone inherited wealth, is taboo. In a small group of 6-8 women, we will gather online to explore our experiences of being gifted money. The four weekly sessions will be intimate, confidential, and supportive; we have much to learn from one another when we feel safe to share.

Each session will focus on feelings and issues, shared and distinct, arising from inheriting. The format will be a mix of presentation, exercises, and discussions in dyads and with the group. Many topics will be covered, including the challenges/gifts of inheriting wealth; navigating inequality with friends, family and at work; exploration of values and money; current money dilemmas; and healing and making the money yours. Writing prompts will help guide the exploration outside of the weekly sessions.

In her work as a psychotherapist over the past 35 years, Kate Levinson has met with many women with inherited wealth. Her doctoral dissertation was a qualitative study on women with inherited wealth who chose to work for earned income. Often when Kate would describe her dissertation, people would respond with envy or comment with, “I wish I had their problems.” Reflected in this statement was the assumption that women with inherited wealth had few or no problems.

It’s easy to lose track of the reality that having wealth doesn’t solve all life’s problems, that money is good for addressing only certain kinds of problems. Kate found that inheritors themselves often thought they shouldn’t have any complaints or problems. Who are they to be depressed if they have money? How can they complain about daily hardships, especially to friends who don’t have the cushion of having wealth?

In this webinar series, we will explore both the shadow side of inherited wealth–which remains mostly hidden–and the gift of being gifted. Becoming more aware of our feelings, conscious and unconscious, brings more freedom in relationship to choices about money and how we use it to create a life and world that reflects our values, choices about how best to live our one precious life.
